SUMMARY:Soldier's Stories: The U.P. and the Great War
DESCRIPTION:  \nOn Thursday\, June 21\, the first of several exhibits commemorating the Copper Country’s involvement in World War I opened at the Carnegie Museum of the Keweenaw\, “Soldier’s Stories: The U.P. and the Great War\,” with a public reception and talk by exhibit curator and Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center’s Director\, Daniel Truckey. \nMr. Truckey’s talk\, “Upper Peninsula Polar Bears in WWI”\, discussed the nearly 100 U.P. men\, known as the Polar Bears\, who served in the Northern Russia Expeditionary Force during the winter of 1918-1919. “This little known and poorly understood part of WWI impacted several dozen soldiers from the U.P. In 1918\, as a response to a cease fire between Germany and Russia\, there was an alliance of British\, French\, Canadian and U.S. troops who were sent to Northern Russia and Siberia to fight against the newly formed Bolshevik government troops.” Some of the soldiers were highly decorated and some gave the ultimate sacrifice. \nIn creating the Soldier’s Stories exhibit\, the Beaumier Center worked with historical societies and families in the Upper Peninsula to collect the stories of individual soldiers\, including their personal histories and experiences in the conflict. The exhibit examines two main aspects of the Upper Peninsula’s involvement in the Great War: 1) the experience of the Polar Bears\, and 2) the American Legion posts formed throughout the U.P. after the war. A recurring theme of the exhibit is the social and ethnic identity of the men\, almost all of whom were first generation Americans\, some not yet citizens. “The conflict had a significant impact on the soldiers’ growing identities as Americans and also for their families.” \n“Soldier Stories” will run through September 30th as part of the World War I & the Copper Country (WW1CC) initiative.

DESCRIPTION:Shoulder Arms (Charlie Chaplin\, 1918\, 46 min.) plus selected film shorts and newsreels \nSeptember 29\, 7:30pm \nRozsa Center for the Performing Arts (co-sponsor)\, Michigan Tech \n\nShoulder Arms is the first feature film directed by Chaplin\, who plays a soldier in boot camp in the “awkward squad.”  Once in France Charlie gets no letters from home. He finally gets a package containing limburger cheese which requires a gas mask and which he throws over into the German trench. He goes “over the top” and captures thirteen Germans (“I surrounded them”)\, then volunteers to wander through the German lines disguised as a tree trunk. With the help of a French girl he captures the Kaiser and the Crown Prince and is given a statue and victory parade in New York and then … fellow soldiers wake him from his dream. \n\nThe film will be screened with live musical accompaniment by guest silent-film organist Jay Warren\, Chicago’s foremost photoplay organist.

Jim (John Gilbert)\, son of a wealthy businessman\, is swept up in the nation’s patriotic fervor and his fiancée’s suggestion that he’ll ‘look gorgeous in an officer’s uniform.’  He joins the Army and becomes best friends with two working class stiffs\, Slim and Bull. The trio endure training camp together in a small French village where they meet Melisande (Renée Adorée)\, a farmer’s daughter. Jim and Melisande fall in love just before he and his buddies are sent to the front. DESCRIPTION:The Hello Girls: The Story of America’s First Female Soldiers (Jim Theres\, 2018\, 55 min.) \n  \nTime/Date TBA\, Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts\, Michigan Tech \nScreening as part of the 41 North Film Festival (41northfilmfest.rg)\, November 1-4 \n\nIn 1918\, the U.S. Army Signal Corps sent 223 women to France as telephone operators who connected over 26 million phone calls and translated conversations between American and French troops to help win the Great War. The women swore Army oaths\, wore uniforms\, held rank\, and were subject to military justice. When they returned home and tried to join veterans’ organizations\, the U.S. government told them they were civilian contractors and not veterans. For 60 years\, the women fought their own government for recognition. In 1977\, with the help of Sen. Barry Goldwater and Congresswoman Lindy Boggs\, they won. Unfortunately\, only a handful were still alive. \n\nJames Theres’ 2018 documentary features rare 100-year old film footage of America’s first female soldiers courtesy of the National Archives and never-before-seen photos from family archives. \n\nTrailer: https://vimeo.com/253332727
