Copper Country at the Silver Screen in 1918

Saturday, September 29th at 7:30pm

An evening of silent film featuring Charlie Chaplin’s World War I film Shoulder Arms (1918), film shorts, newsreel on the war, and Four Minute-Man performance. With live musical accompaniment by guest silent-film organist Jay Warren, Chicago’s foremost photoplay organist. He brings all the color, excitement, and glamour of the silent film era back to life with his original scores for the silver screen. He does so with the theater organs. Tonally superior to the piano, and more spontaneous than an orchestra, they were installed throughout theaters across the nation by the thousands during the hey-day of silent pictures. Able to produce the sounds of an orchestra, complete with tuned percussion instruments and sound effects – they became the workhorse of silent picture music – truly “the voice of the silent cinema.”
